Sustainability

Delivering an energy transition that works for everyone.

We’re making energy fairer, more accessible and more transparent for everyone – helping customers use less, understand more and support the UK’s journey to net zero 2050. Because the greenest energy is the energy you don’t use.

Our sustainability strategy

Our approach

Fairer energy.
Smarter choices.
A more sustainable future.

Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. Our own operations aren’t perfect, but through greater transparency, customer advocacy, and practical lower-carbon solutions, we're helping build a fairer, more sustainable future for everyone.

Fairness

A fair energy transition means making lower-carbon living accessible to everyday households – not just those who can afford it. Everyone should have the opportunity to benefit from a cleaner, more efficient energy system.

People

Real change starts with people. We believe helping households understand and use less energy is one of the biggest drivers of the energy transition. When people feel informed, small changes can add up to a meaningful difference.

Future

Building a lower-carbon future starts with transparency. Through our Live Carbon Dashboard, we’re championing clearer carbon reporting, challenging greenwashing, and supporting the UK’s journey to net zero 2050.

Our Stance

Hear it from our CEO

We are clear that sustainability is not a parallel agenda.

It’s part of how we make decisions, where we invest, and how we manage risk and growth over time. It also reflects a broader responsibility to ensure that the energy transition does not leave people behind.

Our Progress

Measuring our carbon footprint

Together, these factors help us identify where emissions come from, prioritise practical improvements, and measure long-term progress as our business evolves. During the 2024/251 financial year we achieved:

23%

reduction in emissions from our buildings2

14%

reduction in Scope 1 & 23 carbon intensity4

13%

reduction in Scope 35 carbon intensity4

10%

reduction in our total carbon footprint6

Carbon Transparency

Our approach to carbon transparency and Net Zero

Cutting carbon emissions is only part of building a sustainable future. As the UK works towards net zero 2050, we’re committed to honest reporting, transparent progress and building trust over ticking boxes.

Utilita’s pathway

Understanding where our emissions come from helps us focus on the areas where we can make the biggest difference. We measure emissions across our sites, fleet, suppliers and people to build a clearer picture of our carbon footprint and track progress over time.

Our sites use energy every day, so we measure the impact of running our offices and other sites to understand where we can make changes.

Our fleet includes the vehicles and travel that support our operations, helping us understand where we can reduce the impact of getting people from A to B.

Our people contribute to our footprint through the way we travel and work, helping us identify where we can make practical improvements.

Our suppliers have an impact too. We look at the goods and services we buy to understand the wider footprint of our supply chain.

Our Impact

Powering a fairer, low-carbon energy transition

We’ve been driving Britain’s energy transition ever since installing the UK’s first domestic smart meter in 2003—one of the first technologies to help households better understand and reduce their energy use. Today, we’re expanding smart technology and solar to make lower-carbon energy more accessible and affordable.

Using a smart meter means you can see how much energy your home is using, helping you spot where you could use less, save money and cut carbon. They also send readings automatically to your energy supplier.

Solar panels turn daylight into renewable electricity, helping homes and businesses generate more of their own energy. Add battery storage and you can store the energy you generate and use it when you need it, reducing how much electricity you need from the grid.

Creating a lower-carbon energy system takes the right skills. Through training and award-winning apprenticeships, we’re supporting the next generation of engineers build the knowledge and experience needed for the UK’s low-carbon future.

Looking Ahead

Shaping the future of sustainability together

As technology evolves and the energy system changes, we’ll continue working with customers, communities and industry partners to turn that strategy into meaningful action. Our Sustainability Strategy sets out how we’ll build a fairer, more transparent and lower-carbon energy system.

Sustainability FAQs

At Utilita, sustainability means creating an energy system that’s fair, transparent and accessible for everyone. Alongside reducing our own carbon emissions, we help customers use less energy, lower their bills and make informed choices that support the UK’s journey to net zero by 2050.

We don’t offer a traditional green tariff. Instead, we focus on helping customers reduce their energy use through smart technology, practical energy-saving campaigns and greater carbon transparency. Our Live Carbon Dashboard also shows where Britain’s electricity comes from and its real carbon impact, helping customers make more informed choices.

We measure emissions across our operations, covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Our carbon reporting is independently verified, and we publish both annual reports and live operational data through our Live Carbon Dashboard.

Our Live Carbon Dashboard is the UK’s first real-time carbon reporting dashboard from an energy supplier. It uses live data to show Britain’s electricity mix, carbon intensity, our operational emissions and the UK’s energy grid progress towards net zero 2050—making carbon reporting easier to understand.

Small changes can make a big difference. Using less energy, improving your home’s efficiency, installing a smart meter and considering technologies like solar panels can all help reduce your energy use, lower your bills and cut your carbon footprint. If you’re a Utilita customer, you can also view your household carbon footprint in the My Utilita app to better understand your energy use.

1 Percentage reductions are measured against our 2022 baseline.

2 Emissions from the gas, electricity, other fuels and refrigerants used across our offices, energy hubs and warehouse.

3 Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources we own or control, such as heating our buildings and fuel used by our company vehicles. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the electricity we buy to power our buildings and charge our electric vehicles.

4 Carbon intensity measures our emissions for every MWh of energy we supply to customers. It shows whether we're cutting carbon relative to the size of our business, even as the amount of energy we supply grows.

5 Scope 3 covers indirect emissions across our wider value chain, outside our direct control. This includes our supply chain, business travel and employee commuting, and other business activities. Scope 3 is often 95% of an organisations total carbon footprint.

6 Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions combined, compared with our 2022 baseline.
